![]() ![]() Desperate to solve this problem, Steven, Pearl, and Volleyball journey to a place that was meant to heal Volleyball’s eye, but even that doesn’t work. Volleyball has a crack in her eye that can’t be repaired by Steven’s magic spit. We learn that, before our Pearl, Rose had another Pearl that was named Volleyball by Steven. Then we come to “Volleyball”, which adds an even bigger crime to Rose’s past. Forgiving her was the only way to be happy, it seemed. He learned to love himself and that meant he had to accept his mom in some way too, since he carries her gem. The Diamonds were finally willing to stop their conquests so that meant he didn’t have to keep interrogating his own feelings about Rose’s relationship with them. The end result was good but the reason it all started, not so much.īy the end of season five, he had seemed to come to a peace about it, even if that peace basically equates to not thinking about it too much. At first, the war against the diamonds seemed perfectly justified… until he found out she was just trying to get out of having a tough conversation with them. ![]() The more faith he put in trying to rationalize her actions, the more he was disappointed when he learned the actual reasoning behind them. While the other Crystal Gems saw Rose as a hero and mentor, Steven began to see her as the person who left him with all her responsibilities. Steven has learned of both the good and bad Rose has done and has had to learn to reconcile the two. At first, he just wanted to learn everything he could about her, but the more he has discovered, the more complicated Rose became. Steven Universe’s series arc has been Steven slowly discovering the secrets of his mom and trying to process them. Despite lying about her origin, Rose did start the rebellion against home world, one that ultimately led to the relative peace we now have in Steven Universe Future. Rose may have bubbled Bismuth, but it was because of the Breaking Point (although she should have explained to the other Crystal Gems why she did it). It wasn’t right, of course, but we all have moments of friendship we’re not proud of that perhaps involve ghosting someone without explanation. Spinel was left behind because she was horribly clingy and wouldn’t leave Rose alone. It's very far from perfect, of course, but now they can actually COLLECTIVELY do better. Some of these actions were justifiable to fans, or at the very least understandable. Gem culture eventually got there and did huge reforms. Sure, that part is a lie, but everyone else wanting to express themselves and do the things they wanted to do outside of the designated role is still what their hearts desired.Īnd, ultimately, they won. That's kinda why it's important that Rose had to be a lower class gem and not a Diamond. So while they do need a leader (most organizations do), people still had to make the choice to fight. ![]() Hell, their own home planet is completely f'ed up because of their operations. That's a huge scale issue and Gems have already done that to multiple planets and solar systems. ![]() That's their process and that's what Pink/Rose wanted to stop at all costs. Gems kill off all life on a planet to make more of themselves. We're talking about a colonization process that goes beyond genocide. The disagreement that Pink Diamond and the other Diamonds were having was whether or not Earth, which had so much life, should be allowed to be left alone. The diamonds suffered, the Rubies suffered, Quartz, pearls, emeralds, everyone. The way Gem culture worked was most definitely harming EVERYONE from top to bottom. I also disagree about "the war being a lie". Pink/Rose is important but she's still a piece of the puzzle, not able to really do enough on her own, even with Pearl. And everyone kinda saw fusion for what it was for the first time and def thought "why don't I try that?" Garnet has always been the heart of the Crystal Gems, the backbone that kept them going and effective. Pink tried minor attacks to try to dissuade the other Diamonds but once Ruby and Sapphire fused, that completely changed the game in Rose's eyes. And, after that whole reveal, it kinda turned out that Rose wasn't leading the Crystal Gems, it was always Garnet. Someone did have to get the ball rolling but Rose Quartz couldn't do it alone. ![]()
